Built-Up Roofing (BUR), also known as “tar and gravel” roofing, is a popular roofing system for commercial buildings. This article explains what BUR is and highlights its numerous benefits for commercial applications.
BUR is a type of roofing system that has been used for over a century. It consists of multiple layers of bitumen (asphalt or coal tar) alternated with reinforcing fabrics. The layers, called “plies,” are typically made of roofing felt or fiberglass. The top layer is often covered with aggregate, such as gravel or crushed stone, to protect the underlying materials from UV rays, weather, and mechanical damage.
